What a long run from is The Long Goodbye Altman film a good representation of Chandler's work! I'm glad I asked. I think that the whole discussion has illustrated one of the reasons why Hard-boiled and Noir fiction exercises such a hold over us - most of the practioners examine these sorts of questions, "Down these mean streets..." and do so more effectively than most writers of (so-called) literary fiction. My favourites: Chandler, Jim Thompson, Hammett, Derek Raymond, Edward Bunker, Ellroy, Jack O'Connell, I think are writers with a strong moral voice and one I obviously find sympathy with.
I see Leeds lost again, but that's the world of noir, or the noir world for you, I think you should all start supporting Leeds as the archetypal harb-boiled/noir football/soccer team, it's the moral thing to do.
  All the best Avians,
