If you like John D. Macdonald you could try Rick Boyer's Doc Adams series. I'm not sure if they're still in print, but you shouldn't have too hard a time findng them in a used bookstore. Skip The Whale's Footprints, though. That one stunk. Try Billingsgate Shoal or Gone to Earth.
