RARA-AVIS: Shark-Infested Custard

A week down and a week to go in the windy city. Although I am mostly reading nonfiction now, I brought along a few novels for relief from the long days. I finished Shark-Infested Custard a couple days ago. I was sadly disappointed with it. Drab characters, a meandering narrative, vapid dialogue, and a nowhere plot. It was a waste of time. I wasn't totally surprised at this. The last I read of his, The Difference, was mediocre also. Neither of these two books come even close to the brilliance of The Burnt Orange Heresy.

I've read a few others by him. Cockfighter was good, but I wasn't as enthused as most. Miami Heat wasn't bad. Wild Wives was the first time I understood what Mario has called an "irony of style."
