I think for me it's his ability to put me right there; to
feel right along with the protag. His protags and their
worlds are so well developed that I feel like I'm right
there. I haven't found many writers that are able to do that.
But, like someone said earlier, I'm able to "wake up" and be
in a safe place with people I love after delving into his
world. They're depressing as hell, but I love them!
