Should have added: the way that EON (the successors to
Saltzman/Broccoli) finally got the rights to CASINO ROYALE
was, as near as I can tell, through the back door.
In one of those incredibly confusing mergers, or as the
result of a series of related mergers and separations and
temporary agreements and what-not, thavt have become epidemic
in the film industry recently, Sony, MGM, UA, and Columbia
were all (and may still be) spokes on the same wheel. EON has
a distribution agreement with MGM/UA, and Columbia owned the
rights to CASINO ROYALE. When Sony managed to get them all
operating under the same umbrella, the rights to CASINO
ROYALE became available to EON.
