Re the Michael Winner The Big Sleep: granted the British location is dumb, the film does have a few good points. The casting is pretty good. James Stewart as Gen. Sternwood. Harry Andrews as the Sternwood butler. And Richard Boone is definitely entertaining as the killer Canino with a (real?) broken ankle. And Chandler's ending is restored, more on less, with Mitchum doing a voice-over of the "What did it matter where you lay once you were dead?" paragraph, arguably the finest lines that Chandler ever wrote. As I recall, Winner actually used quite a lot of the original dialogue.
