RARA-AVIS: Ray, by Barry Hannah

From: Michael Robison ( miker_zspider@yahoo.com)
Date: 28 Oct 2006

Finished this today. Just barely long enough to call it a novel, I'd say. For a while now I've had a taste for Southern Gothic, and I've been wanting to read something by him for a while. Franklin's dedication in the front of Smonk was to Hannah, and that put the boot in my ass and I bought Ray.

I didn't care for it. Several times it wandered off into some fantasy land that I couldn't relate to. And the story itself was bare to the point of hardly being a story at all. The protagonist commits several serious crimes, and there is never any mention or hint that the law might be after him. Disjointed and unbelievable.
