The finest single work of hard-boiled criticism ever to have been produced is (although Miker hasn't mentioned it yet) RAYMOND CHANDLER - MASTER OF AMERICAN NOIR, available (occasionally) as a free e-book on the "University" section of the Barnes & Nobel website.

It was written by . . . uh . . . oh damn, I used to remember. Miker, who was the guy who wrote that masterful, comprehensive tome?
