There is at least one hardboiled hobo sleuth. Harold Adams' Carl Wilcox, hero of quite a few Depression set novels, earns his keep as a sign painter but usually sticks around a town just long enough to bring a murderer to justice. Adams' style is as spare as Hammett's and the series, on the whole, is well-worth a look. The Ditched Blonde and Hatchet Job are two prime examples.
