I'm a big fan of the New Critics. Their idea is that one of
the main purposes of literature is to raise moral questions.
The idea that literature is supposed to teach morals leans
towards the iffy side. In most cases, this type of literature
either leans towards the juvenile, like Aesops Fables, or
propaganda, like Ayn Rand or Upton Sinclair. It can take the
literature tag, but rather than promoting thought, the reader
is cast as more of a sponge.
And the problems with The Confession are deeper than a bad
boy protagonist.
