Dear Jim,
Sam Birge is Detective Captain and Charley Hagen the
Assistent Lieutenant. They are partners but also competitors.
Sam Birge is an elder homicide detective who is tormented by
his work and driven to find the truth, no matter what the
costs. Charley Hagen is young and hungry for Birges position.
Both characters are contrary but within the series their
relationship is altered as the result of their
collaboration.
The Birge/Hagen novels are police procedurals but they are
also uncompromisingly noir in the mood they set. Fans of noir
will find it to be a very worthwhile read.
