Forget the cop and mystery shows, the best hard-boiled character on radio was Matt Dillon in "Gunsmoke." As written by John Meston and played by William Conrad, the radio Dillon is miles away from the avuncular character as played on TV by James Arness. The radio Dillon is a hard, unsentimental, often bitter character who wrestles with moral ambiguity, violence, and the darker side of humanity on a weekly basis. The stories too are hard and often shocking, still packing a punch 50 years later.
