I know this may not help for English-only readers but in
1980, Jrome Charyn and French crime/noir writer Michel
Martens published together (after they had become friends in
NY and both being jewish from russian migrs) a
series in the French newspaper Libration. This series was
then published as a small book by Lib along with interviews
of the two friends and with an autobiographical short story
by Charyn called Harvey. The feuilleton
(series) is called Arnold, le geek de New York and it is
quite mesmerizing and sold me on Charyn as somebody to
follow...In Arnold... there are many references to the noir
cinema of the 30s and 40s and to people like Veronika Lake,
John Garfield, Victor Mature, James Cagney, that both Jrome
and Michel love and in the interview they acknowledge
spending entire nights at Michels apartment in Paris,
watching things like the famous Nightmare Alley that Michel
discovered with Jrome in New York or old French films like
Le Diable Au Corps or Les Enfants du Paradis. Im collapsing
here a few things from the interview just to say also that
Charyn is since quite well know in France and both his
publications and his articles on US politics or society in
French newspapers and magazines are followed and well
publicized.
The notes of the book say that in the early 80s Charyn
published in France the following: Le Ver et le Solitaire
(The Worm and the Solitary), then LHomme Poisson-Chat (The
Catfish Man) and Eisenhower, my Eisenhower...and that at that
time he had published in New York a book called Darling Bill,
about Wild Bill Hickock, just before starting the Isaac
series...
Arnold, le geek de New York is almost like a written out
BD/graphic novel, with all the noir, all the angles and the
grotesque...it is fascinating...but the only version I know
is in French...Does anybody know if it made it somewhere in
English???
