JJ Maloney wasn't in prison when he wrote his two novels, but
he had done time for murder and armed robbery before getting
out and becoming an award-winning journalist. His first
novel, I Speak for the Dead, is about a crime reporter, but
his second, The Chain, is about a convict, first in prison,
then on the run after an escape. It's been some time since
I've read them, but I was very impressed by both.
Although he died a few years ago, he left a fascinating
website with lots of his crime reporting:
