RARA-AVIS: Re: Prison lit.: noir?

I totally agree with Bill for what concerns Richard E. Johnson, a long term convict.

I will add: CAGE FIVE IS GOING TO BREAK (1970), which is IMO one of his best novels. It's really HB, very hard, compact and very dark. Inmates are planning an escape. A very simple theme, brilliantly revisited in this novel.

Bill Crider: An con and sometimes ex-con writer who definitely deserves a mention is E. Richard Johnson. SILVER STREET, MONGO'S BACK IN TOWN, etc. And of course Malcolm Braly, whose SHAKE HIM TILL HE RATTLES and IT'S COLD OUT THERE have been reissued by Stark House.
