Who is your favorite "noirish" writer?

************ James Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice is about as good as it gets. Gresham's Nightmare Alley is wonderful. So is the movie, with an extra ironic twist at the end that improves on an already great story line. Ellroy's Black Dahlia, too.

McCarthy's Blood Meridian is noirish, I guess, but it's just about in a different league than the above. Faulkner's Sanctuary. Crane's Maggie. Willeford's Burnt Orange Heresy. D'J Pancake's stories. Franklin's stories in Poachers. Charles Williams's River Girl.

Good stuff. Read it.
