Miker-- For what it's worth re Highsmith, I'd recommend
Ripley's Game, supplemented by The American Friend, its film
version starring Dennis Hopper. The Berlin
(not Bratislava!) atmosphere is fantastic.
*************** Ah! Thank you, Robert! I've got The Talented
Mr. Ripley, but to be honest, I rarely enjoy a book as much
if I've already seen the movie, and I've seen that movie.
Come to think of it, I've seen another Highsmith movie, I
think. John Malkovich?
Aside from Hemingway, I'm not a big reader of writer
biographies, but I read and enjoyed Marijane Meeker's
(Vin Packer) biography of Highsmith. Meeker managed to pack
as much tension into the Highsmith biography as she did in
her novels. I've read about a half-dozen of her Vin Packer
novels, and liked them all.
