"I put it to the group: Your top 3 reasons why "Laura" should
be counted in the same breath as "Out of the Past" and
"Nightmare Alley.""
Don't know about the book (have it but haven't read it), but
the movie's noir due to its visual style. And the detective
falling in love with a dead victim has become a mainstay, if
not cliche, of the genre (along with the -- spoiler alert --
if its face was blown off, the corpse ain't who everyone
thinks it is plot).
