The Big Nowhere is the one I would keep (and place a bet on its longevity in the minds of fans). Of course, since it's become part of "the quartet", probably all four will be read as a set.

************** You're making me want to reread the whole thing. I reread The Black Dahlia here recently, so I'm already one down and three to go. I don't recall the individual flavor of each one, but I do remember one turning into an epic with a cast of thousands, it seemed. That was my first negative impression of Ellroy.
