RARA-AVIS: Re: Hardboiled Locations

Just a quick note before the off to say thanks to various contributors for the tips on Las Vegas and San Francisco. I ordered Tim Powers' _Last Call_ on the strength of the recommendation, and it arrived this morning
(that's my in-flight reading taken care of. I will endeavour to keep my hand on my valuables around Fremont Street and the rough end of the strip (I'm staying up the posh end, btw!).

We may have a guide around San Francisco--we'll have to see if that happens--but as we're only there for a few hours (literally, a flying visit!) there won't be time to spend a day at Alcatraz or half a day doing the whole of Don Herron's Hammett Tour (I don't know where I picked up the idea from, but I have a notion that the whole tour takes four hours).

Don Herron's tour is actually scheduled to run on Sundays, but later in the year. I've got a copy of the tour book, that DH signed for Gordon De Mano in 1982, which I intend to take along with me. As we'll be there on a Sunday, I'm still wondering if I should see if he'd be willing to come out, albeit off-season, for the latter part of the tour and a beer. :-)
