But Elvis hated the Beatles and, in turn, Sinatra hated Elvis (didn't stop Ol' Blue Eyes from reaping the ratings benefit of Pvt. Presley's first post-Army appearance, though).

Did Hammett ever say what he thought of Chandler's writing?

As I recall he mentions Chandler in a letter. A positive but impersonal comment.

Re Sinatra's antipathy toward Elvis and Elvis' toward the Beatles, Chandler was not exactly a fan of Ross Macdonald's. Complained about images like "the car was acned with rust" that struck him as being too strained.
