I just finished The Girl With the Long Green Heart and really
enjoyed it. You're right, there's really no suspense or
mystery to it, but I enjoyed the story and the characters.
The ending was interesting -- oh well, we got screwed but
life goes on.
I'm currently halfway through The Gutter and the Grave. I
think the cover art for it is excellent, too: a great
depiction of the rumpled private eye in a dark "noir"
setting, the only bright color being the red dress of the
femme fatale on the staircase.
