Miker, most of those used copies were on there the day
Amazon's page officially opened for sales on the book. The
publicist sent out about 200 copies of the book, mostly to
internet "reviewers", in advance of the release date (on top
of the ARCs that were sent out before the book went to
press). Many of the internet reviewers are scammers who just
want free books and do everything they can to get on
publishers' mailing lists. They immediately place the book
for sale on Amazon (and other sites), competing directly with
the new book sales. (A practice Amazon should discontinue,
but they don't seem to care how they get their money, as long
as they get it.)
You can pick up hardcover copies of Earthquake Weather on its
Amazon page for a penny! (And it's well worth it.) I can only
assume these characters make a few bucks on the shipping and
handling, or else why bother? (Even though a penny is one
cent more than they had to shell out for the book.) I've
bought a few penny copies of EW off Amazon to see what the
"mint condition" copies would look like. They were far from
pristine. So buyer beware on that front. A cheap reading copy
is about the best you'll get out of most of them, no matter
what their ads says.
