I actually did read the English Patient, though I can't remember much of it now. What kept me going was the knowledge that in approximately 80% of the conversations I would have about it afterward, I'd be the only person who'd actually read the whole thing. I was right.

Goes to show, the main benefit of literary publication is the increased sales of coffee tables.
