Hey Mark-- I was replying to the quote of a third party in the post in question, which related an attitude opposite yours (and, obviously, mine). Ellroy was the relevant example from that place. (I think JE may have been transgressive in WHITE JAZZ, but maybe not even there. His attention to sound-biting his own work brings him down, as does his tendency to repeat himself, I think.
 He kind of lost me with the self-indulgent MY DARK PLACES.) Rob

MY DARK PLACES was - for the most part - autobiographical. How could it NOT be self-indulgent?

(And, for the record, I liked that book. A LOT.)
