Been a while, but I seem to recall Cain's descriptions of the
Greek community as being largely positive. I felt them
sympathetic, anyway. The Greek treated the drifter quite
well, as I recall, and didn't deserve his fate. I think the
drifter needed to devalue his victim in order to kill him,
and part of Cain's skill was in recognizing that. And it was
easily done, given the times.
I liked Mildred Pierce, though it was not so tightly written
as Postman. Haven't read Serenade- but I might on your
recommendation.
