King wrote quite a lot of short crime stories for the men's
magazines in the late sixties and early seventies. Some of
them have been reprinted. I don't know if they are all
available. One is in PULP FRICTIONS, ed. by Peter Haining -
"The Fifth Quarter" was in Cavalier in 1972 as by John
Swithen. I seem to remember it was pretty hardboiled.
