First of all, welcome Domenic, great to have you here.

It's kind of interesting to compare the book and movie of Manchette's other English translation, Three to Kill. Like Prone Gunman, this book strips down the genre and performs what the Situationists, with whom Manchette was affiliated (the translator of Three to Kill has also translated key Situationist texts), called a detournement -- which Kalle Lasn describes as involving "rerouting spectacular images, environments, ambiences and events to reverse or subvert their meaning, thus reclaiming them." In other words, Manchette flipped the genre's conventions on their head. The movie, on the other hand, does its best to put those conventions back on their feet, to stuff the story back within the genre. They're both good, but very different things.
