RARA-AVIS: Re: The Pleasure of H-B/Noir

George, I read these books because they're good fiction. Good fiction swings, it presents a psychologically believable situation in a stylized package that makes it more interesting than the equivalent real situation. We've had and have great storytellers and stylists in these genres, and that explains why they hold our interest and we want more. I don't feel any vicarious pleasure, and I've never particularly identified with hardboiled or noir protagonists, though I always root for Parker and I wanted the guy from The Ax (new movie just out from Costa-Gavras, so I hear) to get away with it. And I thought Maximum Bob was cool.

Best,

MrT
