This is only tangentially related to HB/noir, but I don't
quite understand why Keanu would be a mystery, aside from the
usual fun of mocking movie stars. First, he is a star. It's
not about the acting so much as assuming a persona that
others create roles for. And aside from being tall and
handsome etc. I think Reeves has this persona that suits the
times, or at least present notions of what the future
Everyman might be.
He's bi-racial, which implies a future beyond race. The KKK
horror of a mongrelized humanity, if you like, or a desire to
transcend this particular issue. Certainly it's the age of
frequent human displacement. Immigration challenges notions
of the nation state. The other quality is detachment
(and boy is he detached.) Roles call for him to be the
character who is not a believer in anything until the
overwhelmingly right cause comes along, or the guy who just
does not connect to a larger collective society, or the
spaced out teen (not much of that anymore, but once upon a
time.)
So, you cyberpunk fans, are these 2 things- detachment and a
post-race based humanity (earthbound human races)
characteristics of the written genre?
