This is better than Brigid in Casablanca.
The funniest part, for me, is that while visiting PEI this
past summer I discovered more than one suggestion that L.M.
Montgonery was a repressed homosexual, carrying on a
relationship with a young woman until forced to marry
relatively late in life. There's evidence that the writing
fell off at that point and that the marriage was somewhat
less than happy, but that may be because the couple settled
here in Ontario. ("Ontario Gothic," the Globe and Mail Books
section now uses to refer to stories about this place.)
Developers have moved in. From the highway, Cavendish appears
to have become a somewhat surreal collection of small,
roadside theme parks. Green Gables itself is a federal park
(and the best value in the town.) Lovers' Lane runs between
the edge of the property and the rest of the farm, now a golf
course. I can tell you from experience that the trail is,
indeed, very dark and twisted. I suspect not everyone is
counting every swing of their clubs either.
But the cows, I'm pretty sure, are just cows. Kerry
