There's a big difference between being screwed and dying (at least in fiction!). One can die heroically, someone can be screwed by losing what they value most but still be alive and kicking at the end. Mr. Arkadin, for example. so's Pop. 1280. The Getaway's another great example. Doc + Carol surive at the end, realize that they still love each other, but also realize that to continue to survive one has to kill the other.
