I'm very sorry to hear about his death. Aside from his books, the month
(and more) we had with him here on the list was great fun. He was friendly and helpful and wise and knowledgeable and it all came through. I mentioned this quote before, but this is a favourite from one of his messages to the list: "If I have any overriding philosophy in my books it's that the ultimate function of literature is to disenchant the reader from the spell of received wisdom."
