I'm very sorry to hear about his death. Aside from his books,

was friendly and helpful and wise and knowledgeable and it
all came through. I mentioned this quote before, but this is
a favourite from one of his messages to the list: "If I have
any overriding philosophy in my books it's that the ultimate
function of literature is to disenchant the reader from the
spell of received wisdom."
