While it's not about the employee as a cog in the machine, Loren Estleman's EDSEL is a nice hardboiled take on corruption in the auto industry. Some of his other historical, Detroit novels also touch upon the role of that industry in the city's history. And, if I'm not mistaken, one of the Amos Walker novels does as well.
