I recently finished Drop City as well and thought it was
terrific.
I do think it is a book that someone reading Pelecanos for
the first time might read and think "what's the big deal?"
because it doesn't have the manic plot momentum of some of
his previous books. In this regard it is like Shame the
Devil, but without the robbery/car crash jumpstarting
it.
What it does have is another look into the world Pelecanos
has created, which I love. It's all one book by now. Looking
forward to the next chapter.
