Or we could marry the two questions and ask why Chester Himes
could get away using "nigger" over and over again in 1959's
THE REAL COOL KILLERS, but had to substitute "raper" for
"fucker" when having his African American characters speak to
each other, thus having the unlikely words
"mother-raper" appear over and over again in their Harlem
vernacular.
