I was among the Block fans who hailed EVERYBODY DIES as a
vastly underrated triumph and HOPE TO DIE as a disappointment
bordering on tragic (and said so in a review I wrote for
Mystery News). So, I picked up FLOWERS with a fair amount of
nervousness, particularly when I flipped through the pages
and saw all that italicized printing. I knew Block had gone
back to the alternating voices.
As Kevin indicated, it ain't as bad as HOPE TO DIE and isn't
nearly as good as its predecessor. I admit that I've spent
more time thinking about this book than I anticipated. What
I've come to believe, though, is that while it falls pretty
squarely in the middle of the pack of Scudder novels, it
could be a great way to end the series, if that is Block's
intent. I feel much the same way about The Godfather, Part
III. Not a great film on its own, but a wonderful coda to the
entire saga.
