What I've distilled from this interesting discussion on the
use of obscenities (especially the remarks from authors about
their own struggles with the issue) is:
Just because you can use dirty words doesn't mean you must
use them.
And:
Just because a lot of great authors didn't use them doesn't
mean you must not use them.
I'm with Kevin and Mario on this -- they should be employed,
or not, on a case-by-case basis, based on what is right for
the specific character and situation, never just for their
own sake.
