The concept of "where's the action" is foolish. Books are
strings of words. Block knows what he's doing. His Scudder
series is a big seller and he worked hard to establish it.
Like most series, it reaches a point of saturation, or
changes too much for the taste of the reviewer... This type
of review is both juvenile and predictable (the sum of all
that is: cheap).
I can't imagine a hardboiled Parnassus without Block. And may
he continue writing as well as he has done for more than 40
years.
