Dave Zeltserman listed tough-guy writers:
1) Dashiell Hammett 2) Charles Willeford 3) Dan Marlowe 4)
Paul Cain 5) Mickey Spillane
****************** Geez. I've never read anything by Dan
Marlowe. Guess I oughta fix that, huh? Anything by him that
stands out more than the rest?
The detective in Gores's INTERFACE was a real bad-ass.
And, as discussed, Vachss has produced some heavy
hitters, too. I haven't read any of them, but the Spenser
novels by Parker have a tough reputation. I've mentioned
before browsing through them at the bookstore and being
delighted by a first sentence:
"When the phone rang, Spenser was in the garage killing a
man." Haha! Loved it. Might not be verbatim. Close as I can
remember.
