I can't remember who suggested a Ross Thomas month, but
whoever you are, thanks. I just finished OUT ON THE RIM
(1987), after racing through it at top speed, enjoying every
minute. This one of the three about Wu and Durant, a pair of
hardboiled adventurers and con artists, who here get involved
with a plan to bribe a Filipino terrorist with $5 million so
he'll leave the country and let others get on with the
post-Marcos rule.
The great thing about this book is that no-one, absolutely
no-one, ever considers actually giving the money to the
person they're supposed to. All sorts of spies, fixers,
grifters, hoods, and banditos are mixed up in it, and they
all want to get the money for themselves. On top of that, the
double- and triple- and quadruple-crosses come at you
non-stop.
Pigeon drops are mentioned, and I know about that con, but
there's also mention of the Omaha Bank. Is that a real one,
or just something Thomas made up? In this book he renames the
fruit drink franchise Orange Julius to Orange Brutus, which I
think is a riot.
