Could it have something to do with the Writers Guild? I seem
to remember Westlake (from the intro to the "Payback" reprint
of The Hunter, I think) saying that Stephen Frears wanted the
writing credit for The Grifters to read Richard Stark, but
Westlake pointed out that Stark wasn't a member of the
Writers Guild.
