Jeff wrote about Natsuo Kirino's OUT:

Very hardboiled, Miker. Excellent book but grim is the word. Reminded me for some reason, at least at the beginning, of a book by George Gissing I had to read in college. Hopeless people in a horrible environment. Still it kept me reading and I was very impressed. Excellent translation too, at least it was very readable.

************** Glad you liked it, Jeff! Didn't take you long to get through it. I'm trying to write a review of it. I'm slowly sifting my way through Amazon looking for more hardboiled/noir candidates from Japan. Looks like a lot of Japanese mysteries are not hardboiled (not a surprise, really) and others tread a post-modern trail, which I am usually clueless to figure out.
