I just finished MIAMI PURITY. It's my second by Hendricks,
following IGUANA LOVE.
There are varying definitions of noir. A generous
interpretation pulls in everything with a dark and sinister
atmosphere. This is very fashionable right now, and can be
found in the works of Minette Walters, Lauren Henderson, Katy
Munger, Laurie King, April Smith, and a host of other female
writers. But in spite of the dark and spooky atmosphere, all
their female protagonists ultimately triumph.
The origins of noir had protagonists who were ultimately
doomed, fated to fail miserably. None of the above writers
are willing to travel this route, leaving Vicki Hendricks as
the only female author writing in this vein. I think that in
today's political and social climate it takes balls to write
a doomed female protagonist. My hat is off to the glorious
gloom of Vicki Hendricks. She is the reigning queen of female
noir.
