I'm about 3/4 of the way through Black Money, and I agree totally with what Bill wrote below. This is my first Lew Archer novel, and it took about 70 pages for the story to "hook" me. To be honest, none of the characters, including Archer himself, have hooked me.

I'm new to this group; I found it through the Hard Case Crime website. I've read of 5 of the first 6 novels Hard Case has published and enjoyed them all, especially The Confession by Dominic Stansberry (a great psychological mystery with a great creepy ending) and Top of the Heap, a Cool & Lam mystery by Erle Stanley Gardner (I'm a big fan of the Perry Mason novels, especially the earlier ones).
