Connie Willis has a story called "Inside Job" in the January
2005 ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION. Some of it, but not all, is

James M. Cain's story "The Baby in the Icebox" plays an
important role towards the end of the story. In fact, I think
she refers to the Penguin paperback edition that has a Gary
Cooper-lookalike on the cover, which is just the edition I
have. One of Cain's friends appears in the story, but saying
who would give too much away.
