RARA-AVIS: Limbo

I've been reading Lucius Shepard's story, "Limbo," in THE DARK: NEW GHOST STORIES (edited by Ellen Datlow). The primary character is a hard-boiled former thief (apparently on par with Parker) who has broken with his former mob and is now something of a fugitive from both criminals and the law.

During the course of the story, he claims to he a crime writer. He reads a James Lee Burke novel. His name is Shellane, which sounds suspiciously to me like a conflation of SHELL Scott and Mickey SpiLLANE, but may have some other resonance I'm not aware of.
