I finished Richard Stark's new Parker book last night. I
enjoyed it well enough, but I also had some problems with it.
The plot was more complicated than most Parker books, with a
hell of a lot of characters running around complicating
things. Although Stark did a good job of juggling those
characters, less than halfway through I found myself thinking
that the Parker I've known all these years would have walked
away from the job long ago. He is too much of a pro to
continue with that many random factors ready to screw things
up. And then there were even more complications. I almost
felt like Parker had stumbled into a Dortmunder plot, but
played straight. Yes, Parker and his professional partners
were relatively insulated from the amateurs, but the old
Parker never would have risked it.
In addition, more and more people are finding out about his,
well, Claire's New Jersey home. He would have burned that
location several books ago. Perhaps there are changes in
store for the series, though. It certainly ends with a few
things up in the air. And, of course, I'll be right there to
buy the next in the series to see how it plays out.
