This is the epigraph James Crumley used for The Wrong Case. However, in the Macdonald novel -- forget which one, does anyone remember? -- Lew Archer credits it to a wise man from Chicago, implying, but not naming, Nelson Algren. The line, part of a longer set of warnings, is in Algren's Walk on the Wild Side.
