Cain was very popular in books and film, and probably
influential beyond the genres. I do detect some influence on
Thompson, lots of influence on writers like Charles Williams
and Gil Brewer, for example. Cain married melodrama to
suspense in a wholly new way. His best writing is perfect (we
discussed him here not that long ago). He did write dreadful
books like Love's Lovely Counterfeit, a potboiler in which
his writing is unrecognizable. On the other hand, The
Butterfly is a repellent jewel. There was something very
nasty about this writer.
Best,
MrT
